He has made a film that is smart, topical and unexpected, loaded with all the elements Hollywood should want — from the distinguished cast and dramatic plot twists to the killer soundtrack. But Hollywood doesn’t want it.
Anderson, the 50-year-old native San Franciscan who gained notoriety with his 2001 novel “Boonville,” spent more than a decade producing and co-writing the film “Windows on the World” with his cousin Zack Anderson.

The words “profoundly beautiful” are often used to describe works of art, but often some works appear to give new meaning to those words – like the music on this album Carib by David Sánchez, for example. The album comes two and a half decades after his recording debut, The Departure(Sony/Legacy). Granted that an artist often dips his biographical brush into much of what he does – or at least casts his mind back to what forms experiential content – but Carib does this in a much more thoughtful – even philosophical – manner. Themes and content meld seamlessly on this repertoire as a result and driven by the naturally meditative sincerity with which Mr Sánchez presents his art always, means that every note you will hear out of his horn ripens and swells with the kind of gravitas before it is propelled into the atmosphere from the bell of his burnished instrument.

When Mailer Anderson enters a room, he fills it with his larger-than-life presence: On a recent March afternoon, he arrived at our studio dressed as though he’d just stepped out of a page from Dashiell Hammett’s 1930 novel, The Maltese Falcon, completing the shadowy Sam Spade look with a noirish hat, suit, trench coat, in addition to the been-there, seen-it-all expression. (We provided the fog machine.) The acclaimed novelist, screenwriter, playwright and philanthropist, married to Nicola Miner since 1999, restored the former apartment of Hammett and his fictional alter ego, Spade, at 891 Post Street, to resemble what it would have been like to live — and write — there circa the 1920s. Mailer Anderson, who wrote his 2001 debut novel Boonville in a single-room-occupancy unit in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood, recently premiered Windows on the World, a drama he wrote and produced, at the Sedona International Film Festival. It stars Edward James Olmos as a father who leaves Mexico to find work in New York City, where he lands at the World Trade Center’s Windows on the World restaurant. Following the September 11 attacks, his son (portrayed by Ryan Guzman) journeys to Manhattan to find him.

Windows on the World, a new film about the September 11 terrorist attacks, will focus on one of the workers in the venues that occupied the top two floors of the World Trade Center’s North Tower. Variety reports that Edward James Olmos — of Stand and Deliver and Battlestar Galactica fame — will portray the Windows on the World employee, and up-and-comer Ryan Guzman will play his son, who watches the attack in Mexico on his TV, and decides to make a trip to New York City to find his father. Presumably, the producers will be recreating some of the storied dining rooms that crowned the North Tower.
